Published 3rd June 2021Duringthefirstworldwar,McGeoch’sbusinesswasalmostentirelydevotedtoGovernmentcontractsforelectricalandgeneralequipment,particularlythose fromtheadmiralty,forwhomthecompanywasmakingmanystandardisedelectriclightfittings,watertightplugsandsockets,switchboards,controlpanels, switchgear, ironclad distributing boards and more general items of builders’ hardware and ships’ brassfoundry.AcombinationofcarefulmanagementandexpertiseinthemanufacturingprocessesensuredmaximumproductionattheWarwickWorksinBirminghamwhilethe Glasgowwarehouse,inadditiontoitsusualroleasadistributioncentrefortheClydeshipbuildingindustryandthatofScotlandingeneral,steppedupitsworkshop productionofcargoconnectionboxesandoneortwootheritemsofmoregeneralandsometimesdiversehardware. Theseincludedarangeofcoathooks,boathooks and, on one particular occasion, a shepherd’s crook for a Hebridean Crofter!Withhugelossesintheprincipalmerchantnaviesoftheworldtobemadegoodwhenpeacecame,by1919orderswerebeingplacedfornewtonnagebyallthe leading shipping companies. These included Cunard, White Star, Canadian Pacific, Anchor, Donaldson, British India and Red Star.TheracefortheBlueRibbandoftheAtlanticheldbythe‘Mauretania’sincethesinkingofthe‘Lusitania’in1915,wasatfullsteam againandCunard’sfavouriteyard,JohnBrown,whowerebuilding‘Acquitania’whenwarbrokeout,weresoonaddingtotheirfleet with‘Franconia’in1923followedby‘Alaunia’in1925.Oddlyenough,Cunard’sfirstpost-warship,the‘Lancastria’(1922), wasnotbuilt byJohnBrownbutbyWilliamBeardmorewhoenjoyedaperiodofgreatsuccessduringthefollowingdecadeandwhichresulted inaninterestingseriesofcontractsforMcGeoch.Between1922and1925,McGeochsuppliedmanyofthefittingsthat wentintothe magnificent public rooms and luxurious cabins of those ships.‘Lancastria’waslaunchedin1920as‘Tyrrhenia’byWilliamBeardmoreontheRiverClydeforAnchorLine,asubsidiaryofCunard. Shewasthesistershipof‘RMSCameronia’thatBeardmore'shadbuiltforthesamecustomerthepreviousyear.‘Tyrrhenia’was 16,243grossregistertons,578feet(176m)longandcouldcarry2,200passengersinthreeclasses.Shemadehermaidenvoyage, Glasgow - Quebec City - Montreal, on 19th June 1922.
